St. Michaels University School (SMUS) graduates stand out. Over half (58%) of the Class of 2025 earned scholarships worth a total of 3,967,181 Canadian dollars (approximately US$2,816,361), with 168 graduates amassing 873 university acceptances. Amongst them were 112 AP scholars with distinction, with 541 total AP exams written.
Yet, these figures are just one facet of the independent, day and boarding school in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada’s mission: “excellence in all of us.” Beyond offering Canada’s longest-running Advanced Placement programme and innovative learning opportunities in emerging technologies are many more reasons that make SMUS a world-class school.

What makes the academic experience at SMUS distinctive?
SMUS combines rigorous academic preparation with opportunities that help students develop the skills and confidence they need beyond school. Its Senior School offers more than 120 courses and one of Canada’s largest Advanced Placement programmes, with 25 university-level AP courses, including AP Capstone. This breadth gives students the flexibility to explore their interests in areas such as technology, robotics, engineering, and digital learning while building a strong academic foundation.
At the same time, experiential opportunities encourage students to take their learning beyond the classroom and apply their knowledge to real-world situations. Together, these opportunities allow students to pursue individual passions while remaining grounded in a rigorous academic programme.
For Sarah Chan, whose three children attended SMUS, this combination of academic choice and individual guidance made the AP programme particularly valuable. “My children received excellent guidance from counsellors on which courses to take and how to plan their academic pathways,” she says.
How does SMUS prepare students for university and life beyond it?
At SMUS, university preparation is part of a broader approach to helping students become independent young adults. Academic advisors and university counsellors work closely with students to help them understand their options, make informed decisions, and plan their next steps with confidence. In doing so, the school places equal importance on personal growth, recognising that preparing for life after school involves more than academic achievement.
Sarah has seen this approach firsthand through her children’s experience at SMUS. “To me, academics are not only about teaching content but about guiding students to become responsible young adults,” she says. “SMUS provides that bridge between home and university. Students are given independence but also support from teachers and houseparents.”

What is the boarding experience like for students living away from home?
SMUS provides an on-campus boarding experience where students live in six boarding houses within the Richmond Road campus. With houseparents providing day-to-day support, students can easily settle into a close residential community while gradually developing greater independence. The boarding environment brings together students from 25 countries, giving them the opportunity to live and learn alongside peers from diverse backgrounds.
For families sending their children overseas, knowing they will be well cared for can make the transition easier. This reassurance was important to Michael Chen, another parent, who wanted his children to feel connected to their school community. “The school takes good care of the children and also encourages them to do as many activities as they like, and they can make a lot of lifelong friends,” he says. “They grow much more mature without parents’ supervision, thanks to the teams of houseparents.”
What opportunities help students develop confidence, leadership, and resilience?
Students have plenty of opportunities to explore their interests beyond the classroom through sports, music, arts, clubs, leadership, and outdoor education. These experiences give students the freedom to discover new passions while developing practical skills such as teamwork and problem-solving. Through its experiential programmes, SMUS also encourages students to learn by doing, with activities ranging from hiking and camping to water-based pursuits.
For Michael’s son Bryan, one such opportunity came through the Ridgelines and Coastlines programme, which included a week-long camping experience. Before setting out, students worked with teachers to prepare for the trip and understand what would be required of them. Once on the journey, they carried their own equipment and supplies while relying on one another along the way.
“This is just one example of the school providing many diverse opportunities for students to gain experience and learn leadership and resilience,” Michael says.
What makes the SMUS location and community stand out?
SMUS is located in Victoria, British Columbia, on Vancouver Island. Its setting gives boarding students access to a quieter environment away from the city centre while keeping them close to urban amenities and the natural landscapes of the West Coast. The school’s campus brings the academic and residential experience together, allowing students to learn and live within the same community.
The international boarding community adds another dimension to daily life. Students live alongside peers with different backgrounds and perspectives. Michael says this has given his children “greater openness and acceptance” while broadening their horizons.
For Sarah, the experience has helped her children become well-rounded, responsible, and independent young adults. “SMUS has given them opportunities they would never have had at home, and it has truly set them up for success in university and beyond,” she says.
