When Minyi Sun flew from China to the U.S. to pursue the Master of Engineering (MEng) in Surgery and Intervention program at Vanderbilt University, she brought with her a clear ambition: to work alongside clinical professionals and help advance healthcare technology. At Vanderbilt, that ambition became an everyday experience.
“It has truly been a dream come true,” she says.
Sun’s journey reflects what draws graduate engineering students from around the world to Vanderbilt University: the opportunity to gain advanced technical expertise, work across traditional disciplinary boundaries, and apply their knowledge to challenges that matter.
Located on a 340-acre campus in the heart of Nashville, Tennessee, Vanderbilt is a top-ranked, R1-classified research university with a global community and a deeply collaborative culture. The Vanderbilt University, School of Engineering brings those qualities together in master’s degree programs designed to prepare students to lead, innovate, and create lasting impact throughout their careers.
Research expenditures totaled US$90 million in the most recent fiscal year, spanning fields that are shaping the future, including artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, surgical robotics, smart cities, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable infrastructure. For master’s students, that research strength creates access to emerging ideas, leading experts, and an environment in which engineering is connected to real human needs.
Just as important, Vanderbilt offers the personal attention of a close-knit academic community. With a 6:1 graduate student-to-faculty ratio, students learn in small classes, build meaningful relationships with faculty, and receive guidance tailored to their goals. They are encouraged to contribute their perspectives, test ambitious ideas, and grow into confident problem-solvers.
At Vanderbilt, graduate engineering education extends well beyond lectures and textbooks. Students learn by examining complex problems, collaborating across disciplines and applying technical knowledge in a practical setting.
Whether teams are working to address rising energy demands through safe nuclear solutions or developing data-driven tools to navigate traffic congestion, one of the most rewarding parts about pursuing a master’s degree at the Vanderbilt School of Engineering is that projects never stay dormant. That’s the benefit of an international tech hub like Nashville. Courses and research connect to the real world. Through industry collaboration, each student has the opportunity to turn their ideas into the next grand solution to society’s most pressing challenges.

Training tomorrow’s engineering leaders starts with a supportive, dynamic community. At the Vanderbilt School of Engineering, students join a community where different cultures, experiences, and ways of thinking enrich learning both inside and outside the classroom. Many students are international or from underrepresented minority groups in the US.
“I am deeply grateful for Vanderbilt’s welcoming and supportive community, where I have formed meaningful friendships and found exceptional mentors who genuinely care about my growth,” says Sun.
That sense of belonging extends into Nashville. Known around the world as Music City, Tennessee’s capital is also a diverse and internationally connected center for healthcare, education, technology, entrepreneurship and the arts. The city is home to the largest Kurdish community in the United States, as well as vibrant communities with roots across Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Along Nolensville Pike and throughout Nashville’s many neighborhoods, students can discover international markets, restaurants, festivals and community organizations. Closer to campus, Music Row, Hillsboro Village and the city center offer live performance venues, cafés, museums, parks and cultural attractions. Nashville’s crispy hot chicken is a spicy must-try. Murals decorate the streets, while festivals like the Tomato Art Fest bring people together.
For international students, Nashville offers the energy and professional opportunities of a growing American city while retaining the warmth and accessibility for which the region is known
Vanderbilt’s School of Engineering has a strong international research reputation as well, with top scholars from around the world collaborating on cross-border projects. Fortune 500 companies, large corporate headquarters, and acclaimed healthcare organizations are found across the city, including names like PwC, HCA Healthcare, Optum, and Mitsubishi Motors. The school often leverages this rich industry network, ensuring that graduate students leave equipped with the knowledge and technical skills essential to success.
Just look at Sun’s program, the MEng in Surgery and Intervention. Developed by the School of Engineering in partnership with the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering, the 30-credit program is designed to improve the translation of technology into medical procedures that are accessible to patients. The curriculum harnesses Nashville’s massive healthcare industry to offer students unmatched clinical exposure. Since the program’s inception, its alumni have achieved a 100% placement rate within the surgical and interventional field within one year of graduation. Graduates have progressed into industry research and product engineering, management and consulting, start-ups, academic research, and strategic investment.
Vanderbilt’s Master of Engineering in Construction Management offers another example of learning shaped by real-world demand. Combining established construction practices with emerging technology, the program prepares students to address complex challenges across planning, design and project delivery, skills that are highly relevant in a rapidly developing city such as Nashville.
Across its master’s portfolio, Vanderbilt gives students the opportunity to build specialized expertise while learning to see engineering problems in their broader technological, commercial and human contexts.
A valuable investment in your future

A graduate degree is a significant investment, and Vanderbilt works to make that opportunity accessible to talented students. Qualified master’s applicants may be considered for partial tuition scholarships, while additional fellowship opportunities may be available through private donors, philanthropic organizations, and government agencies.
On top of that, Tennessee does not impose a state income tax, which means the cost of living is significantly lower than in coastal hotspots. Dining and groceries are about 20% to 30% cheaper than in New York City and San Francisco, for one.
The value of the Vanderbilt experience also extends beyond the curriculum. Students gain access to a globally recognized university, accomplished faculty, advanced research environments, interdisciplinary partnerships, and a worldwide alumni community. They graduate with knowledge they can apply immediately — and with the adaptability to continue growing as technologies and industries evolve.
Outside the classroom, Nashville gives students plenty of ways to recharge and connect. They can experience live music at venues across the city, explore its celebrated food scene, attend cultural festivals, walk through neighborhoods filled with public art or enjoy the parks and natural beauty of Middle Tennessee.
At Vanderbilt, aspiring engineers do not have to choose between rigorous academics, close mentorship, real-world experience, and an engaging place to live. They can find all four within a community that welcomes their ideas and prepares them to turn those ideas into meaningful impact.
“My experience here has been so rewarding that I am excited to continue my journey at Vanderbilt as a PhD student,” says Sun, who is now
