Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy is a top-ranked public policy school. It puts a premium on experiential learning, something its location in Washington, DC, makes a reality. This allows you to network and gain exposure to leading researchers across policy areas,” says Meshal Alkhowaiter, a Master of Public Policy (MPP) graduate from Saudi Arabia.

The STEM-designated MPP is for those who want to take on leadership roles in shaping policy. You can choose between writing a thesis or working on a client-based capstone while exploring electives that match your goals. Alkhowaiter, for example, interned at the World Bank’s Doing Business Department, which “ranks 190 countries on the ease of doing business,” he says.

There are other STEM-designated programmes, each tailored to align with specific policy interests. With the Master of Science in Data Science for Public Policy (MS-DSPP), you’ll use innovative computing and quantitative techniques to improve policy outcomes.

The Master of International Development Policy (MIDP) focuses on the economic and analytical tools needed to address challenges in emerging and developing economies. For international students, the McCourt School’s STEM-designated degrees come with an added advantage: eligibility for a 24-month extension of Optional Practical Training (OPT), opening the door to up to two years of work experience in the US after graduation.

Alkhowaiter emphasised the value of studying alongside peers from all over the globe. “Georgetown’s student body enables you to connect with peers from around the world who share similar policy interests, thus expanding your perspective and knowledge on those dimensions,” she says.

Proven paths to policy success

These four specialised programmes, among others, provide a comprehensive framework for developing expertise in economics, data analysis, policy design, and leadership. Graduates are well-equipped to address complex global challenges across diverse sectors, including public health and economic development.

MPM graduates secure roles as policy managers, deputy directors, foreign service officers, and cyber policy analysts at organisations like the World Bank and Deloitte. Others have served in the European Parliament, US Congress, and even as the presidents of Colombia and Costa Rica.

MS-DSPP graduates leverage advanced computational and statistical tools in positions such as Data Scientist, Policy Analyst, Consultant, Policy Research Fellow, and Public Policy Specialist. MPP graduates enter diverse sectors — 38% in the public sector, 26% in nonprofits, 30% in the private sector, and 6% in other sectors — while MIDP graduates contribute to institutions like the International Finance Corporation, Inter-American Development Bank, International Food Policy Research Institute, Innovations for Poverty Action, and more.
