What does it take to carve a meaningful and exciting career in one of the world’s most dynamic property markets? Dlysia Cai, an MSc in Real Estate (MRE) graduate from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, ranked the #18 (QS World University Rankings 2027) and #10 (Real Estate Academic Leadership Institutional Rankings for 2021-2025) university in the world, may know a thing or two.

Her journey started with a curriculum that focuses on real estate as a business undertaking and has since taken her on an extraordinary career path scouting retail spaces with great potential in the Greater Bay Area.

A different way to study real estate

The MRE is offered by CUHK’s School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM), one of the departments within its Faculty of Business Administration. Accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), it is the only master’s degree in Asia to bring together real estate, business and hospitality expertise.

This business-focused philosophy reflects how the real estate industry has changed. Your clients would want to know that you can interpret market data, evaluate investments, develop sustainable strategies, and more. That’s why the programme is multidisciplinary. It combines courses in development planning, asset valuation, finance, market analytics, leasing and marketing, ESG, proptech and corporate real estate strategy.

Teaching is led by experienced faculty members and renowned professionals who bring insights from every corner of the real estate sector. “I’ll always remember Dr. Ervi Liusman’s course, where she used Virtual Reality to make complex theories much easier to understand,” shares graduate Alyssa Liu, currently a Product Manager at Alibaba.

“I also found the career planning discussions with Zhaoxin Jiang, an honorary research fellow from CUHK’s Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, incredibly helpful.” For graduate Kim Joo Young, the collaborative classroom environment stood out. “We learn in a rewarding atmosphere while developing true friendships with our classmates and greatly enhancing our network,” she says.

The expertise you gain throughout the MRE will stay with you long after graduation. You’ll be ready to navigate real estate development from business, investment, and community perspectives.

For graduate Jony Jin, now a Senior Analyst in Southern China Research at Savills, the impact was immediate. “The MRE’s professional curriculum has further stimulated my enthusiasm for the real estate industry and boosted my confidence for future career advancements,” he says.

Real estate in action

Real estate is an industry built on knowledge and connections, and SHTM’s extensive industry network helps you develop both. The Executive Speaker Series is where you can exchange ideas with industry leaders. “We even had executives from Hang Lung Properties and Sun Hung Kai Properties,” shares Cai. These are two of the largest, publicly traded real estate developers and property investment companies in Hong Kong.

Peter Shen, now a Real Estate Executive for Hong Kong Office Strategy & Solutions at Knight Frank, found those interactions “a vital stepping stone for me to connect with seasoned real estate professionals in Hong Kong,” he says. “I greatly value its rich industry events, including roundtable sharing sessions and ULI gatherings, which help me engage with local practitioners.”

There’s a lot to learn from Hong Kong, the city, too, and MRE makes the most of it. Field trips take you out into the city to explore commercial developments, logistics facilities, hotels, and other projects. One field walk from Central to Causeway Bay changed Shen’s entire perspective.

“This experience ignited my passion for Hong Kong Island’s Grade A buildings and laid the foundation for my current career focus,” he shares. “We also visited SF’s Hong Kong logistic hub, gaining practical understanding of logistics assets and SF REITs.”

Meanwhile, workshops like dining etiquette help you develop communication skills and professionalism — all while having a bit of fun. And because the programme covers much more than real estate, the skills you gain are just as valuable in finance, investment, and other industries. “The experience at CUHK has given me a strong foundation and confidence as I continue to grow in the real estate profession and navigate new challenges in a dynamic market,” shares Eric Liang, now a Senior Valuer at CBRE.
