Spanish football is mourning the death of Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel, who passed away on Tuesday following a serious collision during a second-division match against FC Andorra.

The 30-year-old was involved in a challenge with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono, who had left his goal to clear the ball during the closing stages of the match. The score was 2–2 when the incident occurred.

Owono was shown a red card following the collision, and the match was subsequently abandoned.

De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest

According to reports from Spanish media, De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest after the incident and was initially resuscitated by medical personnel.

He was transported to hospital for emergency treatment and admitted to intensive care. Tenerife later reported that his neurological condition had deteriorated before confirming his death on Tuesday.

The news prompted an outpouring of grief from his club, teammates, supporters and the wider football community.

Tenerife expressed its devastation in an emotional statement, saying the club was heartbroken and struggling to accept the loss.

The club also extended its condolences to De Miguel’s family, friends and supporters, describing the death as an immense tragedy.

Football community pays tribute

FC Andorra also expressed its deepest condolences to De Miguel’s family and everyone connected with Tenerife.

Former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, who is the majority shareholder of FC Andorra, shared a message of sympathy on social media, writing: “I am so deeply sorry. Rest in peace, Jesús.”

Several major Spanish clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, also joined the tributes.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) expressed its profound sadness and announced the postponement of Tuesday’s Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches as a mark of respect and solidarity.

De Miguel’s football journey

De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 after leaving Castellón, where he had played since 2023.

He began his football career in the youth system at Leganés before representing several clubs, including Unionistas de Salamanca.

His move to Tenerife marked another chapter in his professional career, which has now been cut tragically short.

His death has once again highlighted the risks associated with serious on-field incidents and the importance of immediate medical assistance during sporting events.
