Urban life is no longer the exception — it’s the future. In 1960, only one billion people lived in cities; today there are more than 12,000 worldwide, and their footprint is projected to expand by 50% in the next 25 years.

Ensuring that this growth benefits everyone requires strategic planning and design, and Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Architecture and Planning is well positioned to prepare future leaders shaping the cities of tomorrow. Its accredited Master of Planning (MPlan), recognised by the Canadian Institute of Planners, empowers you to develop solutions to the challenges cities face, including population growth, urbanisation, and sustainability.

The programme fuses an academic foundation in planning law, history and theory with professional practice methods, hands-on studio courses, and a work term. It has prepared students for various high-impact roles. Past graduates have secured careers as planners and urban designers, real estate advisors, strategic transport planners, and community development planners.

Beyond the numbers, it is the student experience that brings the programme to life. Four students share their stories below.
