2027 Asian Cup Postponed as Security Concerns Disrupt Saudi Arabia’s Hosting Plans

2027 Asian Cup Postponed: New Dates and Impact on Premier League Clubs

Story Highlights
  • The 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia has been rescheduled amid regional security concerns. Discover the new dates and impact on Premier League clubs.

The 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia has been rescheduled amid growing security concerns and travel disruptions across the region.

The tournament, which was originally planned for January 7 to February 5, 2027, will now take place from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced the change, explaining that exceptional circumstances in the region had created significant logistical challenges for organising the competition.

According to the AFC, the revised schedule will be submitted to FIFA for approval.

Why Has the Asian Cup Been Postponed?

The decision comes amid heightened regional tensions and reported attacks affecting Saudi Arabia.

A missile attack attributed to Yemen’s Houthi movement reportedly struck Riyadh’s airport in October, resulting in deaths and injuries. The wider security situation has also raised concerns about travel arrangements, event operations and the safety of international visitors.

In its announcement, the AFC referred to regional developments, logistical difficulties and travel disruptions as the main reasons behind the revised schedule.

The tournament will therefore begin several months earlier than the end of the original January-February window, but will still take place across the transition into 2028.

Saudi Sports Calendar Also Faces Changes

The Asian Cup’s rescheduling has affected other sporting events in Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi Pro League has postponed this week’s round of fixtures, saying the revised international football calendar provides additional flexibility to distribute domestic matches more evenly throughout the season.

Meanwhile, several other major sporting events have also faced disruption.

These include the Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition in Riyadh and the Asian Tour’s season-ending golf tournament, which was scheduled for November 18–21 and has been postponed indefinitely.

Together, these changes highlight the wider impact of regional uncertainty on Saudi Arabia’s international sporting calendar.

Premier League Clubs Could Benefit From the New Dates

The revised schedule could also benefit several European clubs, particularly those with players expected to represent their countries at the Asian Cup.

Under the original January schedule, Premier League teams could have lost important players during a busy period of domestic and European competition.

Japan has several players who could have been selected, including Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo and Ipswich Town forward Daizen Maeda.

Other Japanese players potentially affected include:

  • Ao Tanaka of Leeds United
  • Takehiro Tomiyasu and Daichi Kamada of Crystal Palace
  • Hidemasa Morita of Hull City
  • Kaoru Mitoma of Brighton, subject to his recovery from injury

Japan is expected to be among the leading contenders for the tournament.

For Aston Villa, the change could be particularly useful. Under the original schedule, Suzuki might have missed several matches if Japan progressed to the later stages of the competition.

Liverpool could also benefit from the revised dates, although Endo has not featured for the club this season, according to the original report.

Players from other Asian national teams could also be affected. Manchester City’s Uzbekistan defender Abdukodir Khusanov and Australia’s Lucas Herrington of Hull City are among those who may have been considered for international selection.

A Second Consecutive Asian Cup Rescheduling

The latest change follows another major schedule adjustment involving the previous edition of the tournament.

The 2023 AFC Asian Cup was moved to 2024 and transferred from China to Qatar because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the reasons behind the latest postponement are different, with regional security concerns and logistical challenges now affecting preparations.

The revised dates give organisers additional time to address the challenges surrounding the competition. Nevertheless, the tournament’s final arrangements will depend on the approval process and developments in the region.

For now, national teams, clubs and supporters will have to adjust their preparations to the new schedule.
