A $104 billion question: are we preparing students for jobs that no longer exist?

According to recent Pearson modelling, inefficient transitions between education, work and reskilling cost the Australian economy an estimated AUS$104 billion annually.

While much of that cost is linked to workforce disruption and automation, the figure points to the broader challenge that moving people successfully from learning into meaningful work is becoming increasingly difficult.

At a time when artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming industries, reshaping roles and changing the skills employers value, that challenge is only becoming more urgent.

For higher education, this raises a fundamental question: are we preparing students for jobs that no longer exist?

For decades, universities have operated on a clear proposition. Students invest in education to gain knowledge, develop skills and improve their career prospects. Institutions support them through that journey and help prepare them for the workforce.

That promise still matters. But the nature of work itself is changing.

Increasingly, success depends not only on what someone knows at graduation, but on their ability to continue learning, adapt and apply new skills throughout their career. Graduates will need practical AI capability, resilience and employer-recognised skills to navigate a rapidly evolving workforce.

This was a recurring theme throughout discussions at The PIE Live Asia Pacific. While conversations spanned student recruitment, market diversification, policy settings and institutional strategy, many returned to a central question: how can international education continue to deliver value in a changing world?

Across discussions on Australia’s position in the global education market, skills recognition and employment pathways, there was a shared recognition that students are placing greater focus on the return on their educational investment.

They are not simply asking where a qualification might take them. They are increasingly considering the learner journey beyond graduation and whether their education will prepare them for meaningful work, future opportunities and long-term career success.

Will this qualification help me find meaningful work?

Future-ready graduates will need to understand when to use AI, when to challenge it, when to explain its limitations and when to apply human judgement

Will my skills still be relevant when I graduate?

Will employers recognise the capabilities I have developed?

And perhaps most importantly, will I be able to adapt when my industry changes?

Graduate employment rates remain important, but they tell only part of the story. They measure whether someone secured a role after university. They tell us far less about whether that person is equipped to navigate a career that may involve multiple transitions, new technologies and entirely different ways of working.

In many ways, our traditional understanding of employability is rooted in a labour market that no longer exists.

The concept of being “job ready” implies a relatively stable destination. Students acquire knowledge and skills, enter the workforce and apply what they have learned.

However, AI is accelerating change across almost every profession, and the challenge is preparing students to navigate occupations that will continue evolving long after graduation.

This requires a broader definition of workforce readiness, one that focuses not only on preparing people for their first role, but equipping them to continually build new capabilities as industries evolve.

That means embedding a mindset of “learning to learn” across education and training, creating more flexible, modern skilling pathways through apprenticeships, industry partnerships and tailored work-based learning opportunities, and better recognising reputable global qualifications and skills so talented people can contribute fully from day one.

Future-ready graduates will need to understand when to use AI, when to challenge it, when to explain its limitations and when to apply human judgement. In an AI-enabled economy, competitive advantage will increasingly come from combining technological capability with uniquely human skills.

Communication. Critical thinking. Adaptability. Collaboration. Ethical decision-making.

This is where international education has a significant opportunity.

The international student experience often develops many of the capabilities the future workforce requires. Students navigating unfamiliar systems, adapting to new environments and communicating across cultures build resilience, problem-solving skills and the ability to operate in complex situations.

These are not simply by-products of studying abroad. Increasingly, they are employability outcomes.

The challenge is ensuring students can recognise, articulate and demonstrate these capabilities in ways employers understand.

Universities can play a critical role by embedding employability more deeply throughout the student experience. Work-integrated learning, industry projects, authentic assessments and microcredentials can help students connect education with real-world application, while creating opportunities to practise the skills required in modern workplaces.

The AUS$104bn question is not simply about economics. It is about whether our education systems are enabling people to succeed across the entire learner journey, from exploring education pathways and developing skills, to entering the workforce, progressing through their careers and adapting to a lifetime of change.

Because in an AI economy, employability is no longer a destination reached at graduation. It is the ability to keep adapting throughout a lifetime of change.
